The parks varying natural lakes or Villu’s, thick forest, scrubland, coastal area, grasslands make an ideal habitat for its wildlife.

The presence of the Villu is a major attraction for bird life at the park for endemic as well as migratory birds. Endemics include the Ceylon Jungle Fowl, Black capped Bulbul, and Ceylon Woodshrike.

The flora at the Wilpattu National Park is even more diverse and help support much of its wildlife. A survey report released by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) in 2006 records six hundred and twenty three flowering plant species belonging to one hundred and twenty three plant families. Among them, twenty seven plants were endemic and a further twenty one plants were recorded as threatened.

  • The park is ideal viewing for Spotted Deer, Barking Deer, Jackals, Wild Boar, Water Buffalo and Mugger Crocodiles plus a host of reptiles.
  • The species diversity at the Wilpattu National Park is extremely varied and is home to no less than thirty five different mammalian species and a sizable bird life. Although the most popular are the Leopard, Sloth Bear and Asian Elephant.
  • The presence of the Villu is a major attraction for bird life at the park for endemic as well as migratory birds. Endemics include the Ceylon Jungle Fowl, Black capped Bulbul, and Ceylon Woodshrike.
  • A sizable reptile population including the Monitor, Cobra, Indian Python, Rat Snake, and Mugger Crocodile also share space within the park premises. Star tortoises, pond and soft shelled turtles are most often seen by the Villu’s.
